Today, Senator Brandon Creighton (R- Conroe) was appointed to serve
as Chairman of the Senate Education K-16 Committee for the 89th Legislative
Session, establishing a single, powerful committee to oversee education policies from
early childhood to the workforce. Together, public education and higher education
account for 53% of the state budget. He was also appointed to the Senate
Committees on Finance, Business and Commerce, and Jurisprudence.
“Texas lawmakers must view education as a continuum, where early childhood, K-12, higher
education, and workforce training are interconnected investments that build on each other, said
Creighton. “By aligning these efforts, we can ensure seamless transitions, equip students for
workforce demands, and secure Texas’ economic future,
Sen. Creighton has reaffirmed his commitment to passing school choice legislation,
the Texas Parental Bill of Rights, and the Texas Teacher Bill of Rights in the 89th
session– bills that all passed the Texas Senate in the 88th Regular Called Session and
the 3rd and 4th Special Called Sessions.
“The future of Texas begins in the classroom, and I am committed to advancing policies that will
ensure the 6 million students in Texas schools have the foundations for academic success, safe and
secure campuses, educators that feel valued, and parents that are empowered to be part of their
children’s education. After the rejection of billions of new funding for public education, the cause for
school choice, teacher raises, and overdue reforms is even more urgent this session,” said Senator
Creighton.
Throughout the interim, Senator Creighton has traveled across Texas, meeting with
hundreds of teachers, administrators, law enforcement officers, parents, and students
to understand their goals for Texas schools. He has also worked closely with higher
education officials and stakeholders to implement key 2023 legislation, monitor
compliance and plan for future improvements. Building on his past success with bold
reforms, Senator Creighton is poised to lead once again in establishing Texas as the
nation’s leader in college and university excellence.
“Since passing SB 17 in 2023– the strongest ban on DEI in the nation– several states and
multi-billion dollar corporations have followed Texas’ lead, which makes clear that we are the true
national leader to return higher education to education and innovation, not indoctrination, said
Creighton. “Our reforms are working, but there is still a great deal of work ahead, and I am
ready to pass meaningful legislation that will reform university governance, reign in faculty senates,
and ensure that taxpayer dollars are directed to meaningful degrees for the Texas economy.
“I want to thank Lt. Governor Patrick for his confidence, and the committee members for their
willingness to tackle these critical issues. We will all work together to expand access, opportunity and
value for the millions of students in Texas schools.”
